You can spend hours every day trying to figure out how to read each kanji on the site. According to a Kyoto University study, being able to write, read, and understand kanji affects the acquisition of language skills. A rubric or furigana is a reading aid in Japanese that consists of smaller kanji printed above or next to the kanji. When I taught kanji in elementary school, we had to write down each kanji several times and turn in the notebook so the teacher could check it. This number is based on the daily number of kanji studied at the end of 9th grade and some additional kanji added by the newspaper.
